Welcome!!

Department of Civil Engineering at Fukuoka University

The Department of Civil Engineering integrates research, education and professional service in areas related to civil infrastructure, the environment and the recycling of resources. We provide the profession and academia with outstanding graduates who advance both engineering practice and fundamental knowledge.

On the DCEF

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1964 as the eighth department at Fukuoka University. In 2019, about 430 undergraduate and 20 graduate students belonged to the DCEF. The DCEF has 10 professors, 8 assistant professors and 7 research associates as listed below. We have experimental laboratories for hydraulics, environmental control, soil mechanics and civil engineering material at the DCEF.

Upon graduation from our college, you will be ready to proceed to higher educational program such as a master’s degree and/or PhD in School of Architecture and Civil Engineering or in School of Energy and Environment Systems at Fukuoka University.

as listed below

Message from the DCEF

In the 21st century, societies need a balanced strategy which considers natural environment, a rapidly aging population and the recycling of resources for the future.

In the DCEF, students can study the fundamentals of our infrastructure and the ways in which it interacts with our natural and social environments.

You will build social infrastructure in which people can make a living comfortably and safely by studying theories and technologies management and maintenance of social infrastructure in the DCEF. We have professional education courses, experiment courses and exercise courses. Moreover, we also provide practical education through inspection tours of social infrastructure facilities, internship in public offices and/or business enterprises, small-group instruction and our graduation thesis.

Fukuoka University

Fukuoka University traces its origin back to 1934, when Fukuoka Higher Commercial School was established under the prewar education system. It was renamed Kyushu College of Economics in 1944 and two years later it became Fukuoka College of Economics. In 1949, as part of the restructured postwar education system, it was reestablished as Fukuoka College of Commerce.
Finally, when the Faculty of Law and Economics was established in 1956, the name was changed to the present Fukuoka University. Since then, Fukuoka University has grown into one of the largest universities in western Japan, adding new faculties and graduate schools as listed below. The university is located in Nanakuma, in the southwest of Fukuoka city, on a spacious, integrated campus that covers some 560,000 square meters.

Fukuoka City

In addition to being one of the fastest growing, most cosmopolitan and dynamic cities in Japan, Fukuoka is also one of the core cities in the Asia-Pacific region. Lying close to China and South Korea, since ancient times it has been a gateway through which trade and cultural influences from the continent have flowed into Japan. Modern Fukuoka is the administrative, economic, cultural and educational center of Kyushu, with many higher educational institutions, large-scale commercial centers and a particularly high concentration of Information Technology-related businesses. The city’s present population exceeds 1.3 million, and it is immensely popular among young people, with the second highest per-capita ratio of students in Japan.

Despite its growth, Fukuoka is a city still blessed with natural riches, with the blue, island-studded Japan Sea to the north and densely forested mountains to the south. Even downtown, water and greenery are abundant, with many parks such as Ohori Park with its picturesque lake. The climate is mild, with hot summers, mild winters and beautiful springs and autumns. The average annual temperature is 17degree.

Thanks to its geographical location and the efficiency of its transport and communication systems, Fukuoka is a mecca for national and international conventions. The most recent example of this was the important G-8 Finance Ministers summit meeting hosted by the city in July 2000, which helped spread Fukuoka’s fame as an international information-oriented city.

With its historical and geographical links to Asia, Fukuoka plays a key role in Japan’s relationships with other Asian countries. Among the many academic and cultural exchange programs the city promotes is Asian Month, a month-long festival which takes place in September each year, held to deepen understanding between the diverse cultures of Asia and promote friendly relationships between the citizens of Fukuoka and those of the Asia-Pacific region. Highlights include a renowned Asian Film Festival and a wide range of cultural, artistic and academic events.

Fukuoka is also famed throughout Japan for its unique festivals. The most famous among them is the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, which traces its history back more than 750 years and is designated by the government as an important intangible cultural asset. Tourists from all over Japan and abroad converge on Fukuoka every July to watch this exuberant and joyful summer festival, in which seven teams of loin-clothed men compete against each other in running through the streets carrying a one-ton portable shrine on their shoulders.
